Lefkada (Greek: Λευκάδα - Lefkáda) is a city and a former municipality on the island of Lefkada, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Lefkada, of which it is a municipal unit.[2] It is the capital and main town of the island of Lefkada, located in the northern and northeastern part of the island. The city had a 2001 census population of 13,947 inhabitants.

Lefkada is a very pleasant, friendly, typical Greek town. It is an ideal place to stay on holiday. As well as travellers staying for one night before they board their yacht, many tourists use the town's hotels as a base for visiting the local beaches. But even if you are staying in one of the other holiday resorts on the island it is worth making a visit to Lefkada town one day during your holiday for the shops, museums and atmosphere.

In Lefkada, you can visit a great number of Archeological places.The visitor can start his route from the Municipality of Lefkada , continue to the Municipalities of Ellomenos and Apollonia, ending up to Kalamos. The caste of Aghia Mavra is located at the entrance of the island. It is one of the most imposing medieval buildings of Greece, representing the fortification art of this period. It was built around 1300 from a Frank leader, Ioannis Orsini, when he took Lefkada as a wedding gift for his wedding with the daughter of Epirus Bishop Nikiforos A.
The 'Blue Flag' beach of Aghios Ioannis is developing rapidly as the second windsurfing centre on the island,
after Vassiliki. It is only 1.5 km West of Lefkas Town and there are five abandoned windmills on the beach to the North of Aghios Ioannis, used in the past to put the reliable North Westerly winds to good use.
Events of the island
The festivals of Speech and Art have been first organised in 1955. The planning, organisation and the performance are developed by the Cultural Centre of Lefkada. The programme includes all forms of art. All the performances have been taking place in the summer time. Together with the Athens Festival is one of the oldest cultural institutions of Greece.
International Folklore Festival has been organising for 45 years. It’s an institution that promotes, since its foundation in 1952 from Antonis Tzevelekis until nowdays, the idea of peace, friendship, fraternity and solidarity of the people worldwide, with folklore forms of art, dance and music.
